Dermaplaning & Hair Growth: Will My Hair Grow Back Thicker?

One of the most common questions we hear at Estetica Belle is:
“If I dermaplane, will my hair grow back thicker?”
The answer is simple, reassuring, and backed by skin science:
No — dermaplaning does NOT make your hair grow back thicker, darker, or faster.
Here’s why:
Dermaplaning Removes Vellus Hair, Not Terminal Hair
Your face has two types of hair:
1. Vellus Hair (Peach Fuzz)
Soft, fine, light-colored hair — this is what dermaplaning removes.
Vellus hair has no pigment and a very thin follicle, so it cannot grow back thicker or darker.
2. Terminal Hair
Thicker, darker hair (like brows, scalp hair).
Dermaplaning does not affect terminal hair at all.
Dermaplaning only targets the fine vellus hair sitting on the skin’s surface — it does not touch or change the hair root, follicle, or hair structure.
Why Your Hair Won’t Change After Dermaplaning
Hair regrowth is determined by:
genetics
hormones
follicle type
NOT by shaving or dermaplaning.
Because dermaplaning does not alter the follicle, the hair grows back:
the same color
the same thickness
the same texture
at the same speed
Clients often think it's thicker, but it’s simply because:
the hair grows back with a blunt edge (not tapered)
it's growing back all at the same time
your skin is smoother, so you feel it differently
This effect is temporary and does not change the actual hair structure.
